Letters to V. Avril

With the post Briefkasten. Kino. we got an overview of available trade journals for the German-Speaking audience in 1910. One of the listed journals is Internationale Film- und Kinematographen-Industrie. Illustrierte Fachzeitschrift für alle Gebiete der Projektionskunst und deren Schaustellungen. Since information regarding this trade journal is scarce I‘d like to use this post to showcase some physical remnants of this publication.

Here we have three envelopes all send in 1910 to V. Avril Optische Glasfabrik in Zabern, Elsass (today Saverne). All envelopes were send by the publishing house of W. v. Frankenstein, the publisher of Internationale Film- und Kinematographen-Industrie which was rebranded as Projektion. Internationale Film- und Kinematographen-Industrie starting 1911.1 Judging by the date of the postmark of the third envelope the rebranding might have happened as early as August, 1910.

thoughts

The actual content and therefore the reason for the creation of the letters is unknown since only the envelopes survived.
According to them the publishing house W. v. Frankenstein contacted V. Avril at least three times in 1910. One probable reason for this might have been cold calling of the publisher in order to acquire the factory owner as an advertising customer for their trade journal Internationale Film- und Kinematographen-Industrie since the addressee regularly placed ads in Der Kinematograph2. Considering this a publisher simply had to go through competing journals to look for potential customers.
